James W. Kay
April 12, 1935 ~ July 29, 2023

Retired Chief Warrant Officer (4), James Wilbur Kay, US Army passed away Saturday, July 29, 2023. He was not a man of few words, nor would a few words describe his life or his accomplishments. He was a true American hero. He dedicated his entire life to God, country, and family. The American dream of freedom, democracy, and individuality “Be all you can be” exists because of combat veterans like “Wilb” Kay.

After completion of his service he came back home to Rock Spring to raise prime beef cattle. His farm practices and methods are and were an example to others in quality and conversation.

He is survived by his daughter, Kim Palmour (Albert), son, Kenneth Kay (Hannah), son, Brad Kay along with 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Raymond Kay, sister, Liz Zornes, and special friend, Elaine Pruitt; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Ezekial (J.E.) Kay and Alice Payne Kay, brothers, David Kay and William Clayton Kay, sisters, Nancy Morgan and Sue Shipp.

He loved his family, his friends, and neighbors and they loved him. He was compassionate, giving to those in need, his church, and the community.

James Wilbur Kay would tell us “old soldiers never die- they just fade away. And like the old soldier of that ballad I now close my career and just fade away- an old soldier who tried to do his duty and God gave me the light to see that duty. Good-bye”

A graveside service will be 1 PM, Friday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Pastor Denny Patrick officiating.

Family will receive friends 5-8 PM, Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home & Crematory, Battlefield Parkway.
