John Douglas Coleman

John Douglas “Doug” Coleman age 85, of LaFayette, Georgia passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Doug was born on September 14, 1938 in Jackson, Georgia to the late John L. and Annie Rebecca Britton Coleman. He lived in Jackson until moving to LaFayette in 1973. He was a graduate of Jackson High School – Class of 1957. He served in the Georgia Army National Guard for six years. Doug enjoyed being a Civil War Reenactor, loved history, and served as an extra in the movie “Gettysburg.” He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans – John B. Gordon Chapter. He also enjoyed metal detecting for Civil War relics. Doug enjoyed working and had worked up until just a few weeks before of his death. He worked as an insurance representative for over forty years, twenty-nine years with Liberty National. He also worked with General Motors for almost ten years. For the past thirty years he has worked in pre-need insurance sales for many local funeral homes and served as a funeral assistant with Chattanooga Funeral Homes. He was a member of Burning Bush Baptist Church in Ringgold, Georgia. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter: Johnna Denise Coleman Taylor, sister: Jennifer Coleman Garr and brother: R. Scott Coleman. Doug is survived by his wife of sixty-six years: Sylvia Thaxton Coleman of LaFayette, GA, their children: Jeff (Sandra) Coleman of Jackson, GA, Marti (Lee) Smith of Chickamauga, GA, son-in-law: David (LaRae) Taylor of LaFayette, GA, brother-in-law: David Garr, grandchildren: Beth (Randy) Johnson of Soddy Daisy, TN, TJ Parrish of LaFayette, GA, Lindsey (Matt) Hunt of Monticello, GA, Allie Coleman of Jackson, GA, Cole Smith of Chickamauga, GA, great grandchildren: Katie Johnson, Brodie Johnson, Myles Hunt, Josie Jones, Amelia Hunt, several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Saturday - August 31, 2024 at the funeral home. A celebration of Doug’s life will be held at 1:00 pm in the chapel with Keith Willard, Sparks Bowers and David Dunlap officiating. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Jackson City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to The American Heart Association at P.O.
