Joyce Lucy Brewer Carter, age 89, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at home on July 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, to the late Robert and Emma Brewer Sr., Joyce spent the first half of her life in Ohio before settling in Chattanooga, where she lived for many years. She was a member of Crossroads Church of East Ridge. Known for her kind spirit and gift for hospitality, Joyce found joy in cooking for others and never hesitated to lend a helping hand. Her love for dogs and her ability to strike up a friendly conversation with anyone she met were hallmarks of her warm personality.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Carter; her children, John Luce, Jackie Quinn, and Robin Matthews; her grandson, John Luce; and all nine of her siblings.
She is survived by her children: Linda Luce, Donny Luce, Laurie (Keith) Goins, and Michael (Pam) Luce. She leaves behind a legacy of love in her grandchildren: Donald Luce III, Christopher Luce, Keith Goins Jr., Amanda (Kevin) Quinn, Brandon (Heather) Goins, Travis (Dallie) Gibson, Terry Luce, and James Luce; as well as numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a host of extended family members and cherished friends.
The family will receive visitors at Wilson Funeral Home in Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia, on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., and again on Thursday, July 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service celebrating Joyce’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 18, in the Fort Oglethorpe Chapel of Wilson Funeral Home with Bro. Caleb Figgures officiating. Interment will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park in Red Bank.
