Marie Mayes, 86, of Chickamauga, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday February 24th, 2026.
Mrs. Mayes, daughter of the late John L. Ledford and Ruby Taylor Ledford, was born August 2nd, 1939, in LaFayette, Georgia. She has lived in the North Georgia area for most of her life and was a member of the Shields Baptist Church in Chickamauga. In church she taught Sunday school, sang, and helped with the children’s choir and vacation bible school. Marie left behind a life centered on God, family, and caring for others, especially children. She worked in many different daycare settings including Apple Brooke and South Rossville. Marie enjoyed sewing, ceramics, and crafts, along with cooking for her family. She enjoyed watching game shows, the Food Network, and listening to southern gospel, country, and “Elvis Presley”. Marie will be remembered for her kindness and the many lives she touched through her care and dedication.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings Geraldine, Judy, Glazier, Raymond, Leonard, Leon, and Luther “Bud”.
Left to cherish her precious memory are her loving husband Leonard “Sonny” Mayes of 68 years; her children Vickie (Mark) Castings, Vivian (Mike) Shoemaker, Tina Creek, and Leonard “Trey” Mayes; her brother Lonnie (Karen) Ledford; her grandchildren Jeremy, Lauren, Sarah, Josh, and Collin; her great grandchildren Isaiah, Katherine, and Olivia; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the chapel of W. L. Wilson & Sons Funeral Home, 555 West Cloud Springs Road, Fort Oglethorpe, on Sunday, March 1st, 2026, 3:00pm, with pastor Tony Vona officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Sunday March 1st, 2026, from 1-3pm. Interment will be held at Lakewood South Memorial Gardens on Monday, March 2nd at 2:00pm.
