Mary Phyllis Denton BlackRinggold

Mary Phyllis Denton Black, age 77, of Ringgold, Georgia, passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord on Friday, July 4, 2025, following a prolonged illness.

Born in Fort Oglethorpe, GA, to the late Robert and Margarett Flener Denton, Mary was a lifelong resident of the North Georgia area and a woman of deep Baptist faith. She retired from Shaw Industries in 2015 after more than 25 years of dedicated service.

Mary was a devoted mother, beloved grandmother, cherished sister, favorite aunt, and loyal friend. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family—especially her grandchildren—and she was known for going out of her way to make those moments special and memorable.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, William Lee Black; daughter, Colette Price; and brothers, Robert Denton, Charlie Denton, Wayne Denton, and Lyndel “Fat” Denton.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Connie Smith and Cathy (Johnny) Smith; siblings, Ann Chavis, Juanita Thompson, Shelia Gillespie, Pat Denton, and Wesley “Dinky” Denton; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service to honor Mary’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, July 10, 2025, in the chapel of W.L. Wilson & Sons Funeral Home, Fort Oglethorpe, with Bro. Mark Gillespie officiating. Interment will follow in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 9, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and prior to the service on Thursday.
