November 18, 1941 – May 25, 2025
With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of Edgar Lee Johnson, who passed peacefully into eternal rest on May 25, 2025, at the age of 83. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and minister, Ed lived a life marked by faith, family, and a steady spirit of kindness that touched everyone he met. Born on November 18, 1941, Ed was a light in the lives of those around him from the very beginning. On August 31, 1962, he married the love of his life, Joyce Johnson, who lovingly called him “Eddie.” Their marriage of over 62 years was filled with unwavering love, deep friendship, and shared faith. Together, they built a home that radiated warmth and welcome. In September of 1968, Ed answered a profound calling and entered the ministry as a Baptist minister—a path that would define his legacy and impact countless lives. Through decades of faithful service, Ed shared the love of Christ with his congregation and community. His sermons inspired, his prayers comforted, and his presence brought peace. And oh, how he made us laugh. Ed proudly wore the crown as King of the Dad Jokes. With perfect timing and a twinkle in his eye, he could always be counted on for a pun or a groan-worthy zinger—usually followed by his own hearty laugh. His humor was part of his ministry, lifting spirits and lightening hearts wherever he went. Ed was a proud and loving father to his late son Reggie Johnson, whom he held dearly in his heart; Jeff Johnson (Brooke); and Joy Phillips (Mark). He was a joyful grandfather to Parker Johnson (Morgan), Peyton Johnson (f. Christian McKenna), Madi McDonough (Matthew), Andrew Phillips, and Ryan Phillips. He was also a delighted great-grandfather to Georgia Johnson, daughter of Parker and Morgan, who brought him endless joy. Ed will be remembered for his warm hugs, his genuine laughter, his deep wisdom, and his steady faith. Whether behind the pulpit or sitting around the dinner table, he lived with purpose, humility, and heart. His legacy will live on in the stories told, the lives he touched, and the family he so dearly loved. The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 31, 2025 from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm with a celebration of Ed’s life beginning at 5:00 pm officiated by Rev. Kelly Ridings and Rev. Chuck Romain at the Fort Oglethorpe Chapel of W.L. Wilson & Sons Funeral Home. Burial will be on Sunday - June 1, 2025 at Woods Memorial Park, Greer, SC with a graveside service. All who knew and loved him are welcome to attend and honor a life beautifully lived. “Well done, good and faithful servant.” In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either Peavine Baptist Church’s Building Fund or to Oakwood Christian Academy. Arrangements are by W.L. Wilson & Sons Funeral Homes - 555 West Cloud Springs Road - Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia 30742. An online register book may be signed at www.wilsonfuneralhome.com.
