Sue Gilreath Underwood, age 85, of LaFayette passed away Sunday, April 02, 2023.
Sue was born on February 02, 1938 to the late Brady and Laura Nuckolls Gilreath. During her life journey she had a love for cooking, baking, serving the Lord, music and her family. Having a servant’s heart, she became known to many as “lunch lady”, preparing and serving lunches at Fortune Grammar and Gilbert Elementary for over 20 years. With her desire to serve the Lord she became a member of Second Baptist Church where she played the piano and sang in the choir for many years. She then was led to move her membership to Ridgeview Baptist where she continued to use her musical talent to serve the Lord and others. Being gifted with a servant’s heart, allowed Sue to leave a legacy not only to her community, but also to her family by being a caring and loving wife, mother and a loving, loving grandmother.
Along with her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Underwood; and her sister, Faye Dawson.
She is survived by her sons, Anthony (Melanie) Underwood and Neil Underwood; seven grandchildren, Brady (Krista), Nathan, Abby, Megan, Haley, Samuel, and Aubrey; several nieces and nephews also survive.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 8th at 2 p.m. in the Wilbanks Memorial Chapel with Pastor Mike Wallin officiating.
Interment in the LaFayette Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers are Brady Underwood, Nathan Underwood, Samuel Underwood, Gerald Underwood, Scott Underwood, Roger Dawson, Alan Hix, James McConnell and Brian Bandy.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 1 p.m. until hour of service.
