Walker County officially opened Adventure Acres to the public Wednesday, marking the debut of the county’s first signature park.

Located at 370 Salem Road in Rossville, the new recreation destination features a nature-themed playground, splash pad, pavilion with restrooms, walking trail, solar-powered charging station and open green space designed for non-organized recreation.

County officials say the park was designed to provide a unique outdoor experience for residents of all ages while highlighting the natural character of Walker County.

“From its distinctive design and multi-generational appeal, Adventure Acres offers a unique space that reflects the character of Walker County by integrating nature with recreation,” said Joe Legge, director of communications and community development for Walker County Government. “This space was built to stand out and serve as a true landmark for our community.”

The playground includes more than 60 components, including a multi-lane zip track, swings and freestanding climbing boulders connected by a timber ladder. The splash pad features more than a dozen water elements, including sprayers, spreaders, soakers, barrels and buckets designed to keep visitors cool during the summer months.

In addition to the more active attractions, visitors can also enjoy the quarter-mile surfaced walking trail, relax beneath the pavilion or use the green space for activities such as picnics, frisbee, yoga and playing catch.

Angie Teems, chairwoman of the Walker County Board of Commissioners, said the park represents an investment in community quality of life.

“Adventure Acres reflects our commitment to strengthening quality of life features and expanding opportunities for residents and visitors alike,” Teems said. “We are proud to continue investing in public spaces that bring people together where life-long memories can be made.”

The project was funded primarily through a $2.2 million American Rescue Plan Act grant aimed at improving public health in qualified census tracts. Officials noted the park site is located within a qualified census tract and borders another.

Adventure Acres is open daily from sunrise to sunset. The splash pad currently operates from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.
