Online discussions and community concerns have brought renewed attention to the future of a historic hospital property in Fort Oglethorpe that has remained vacant for nearly five years.

The former Hutcheson Medical Center sits within the historic Barnhardt Circle area, a location with deep ties to Fort Oglethorpe’s history. The area was once home to military training camps, soldier housing, and medical facilities. In 1904, the Post Hospital was constructed to serve military personnel and the surrounding community, remaining active through both World War I and World War II.

The site later became home to Hutcheson Hospital, which was developed in the early 1950s as a community hospital serving Northwest Georgia. The facility operated for decades before changing ownership.

CHI Memorial purchased Hutcheson Medical Center in 2017. The hospital eventually closed after CommonSpirit Health, formerly known as CHI, opened a new facility in Ringgold.

Following the closure, the property was donated to the Catoosa County Economic Development Authority. The building has remained unused since then, leading to questions about its future.

The Fort Oglethorpe Historic Preservation Commission recently raised awareness about the property through social media, expressing concerns about the possibility of demolition and encouraging discussion about preserving the historic structure.

Community members have shared a variety of opinions, with some supporting preservation efforts while others have suggested possible redevelopment ideas.

While the building holds historical significance, the property also faces significant challenges. The structure has reportedly experienced extensive deterioration, including mold issues and roof damage, making future reuse a complicated and costly process.

Catoosa County officials said the hospital is not currently listed for sale, but plans are underway to begin marketing the property. Any future sale proposal would require review and approval by county commissioners.

Officials said public input will be considered as discussions continue. For now, the future of the former Hutcheson Medical Center remains undecided as county leaders explore options for the historic property.
