Walker County Tax Commissioner Clarifies Homestead, Senior Exemption Rules

The Walker County Tax Commissioner’s Office is reminding property owners that those who have already been approved for a homestead exemption or an age-based exemption do not need to submit a new application each year.

According to the office, approved exemptions remain in effect as long as the property owner continues to meet the eligibility requirements. The most common reason a new application is required is when there has been a change to the property’s deed or ownership.

Officials also noted that additional exemptions may become available as homeowners reach certain age milestones. Exemptions are available for qualifying residents at ages 62, 65, 70 and 75, with eligibility for some programs based on both age and income.

The Tax Commissioner’s Office encourages residents who have recently reached one of those age milestones to contact the office to determine whether they qualify for an additional exemption.

Property owners with questions about their current exemptions or whether they need to file a new application are encouraged to contact the Walker County Tax Commissioner’s Office for assistance.
