The Museum of LaFayette is seeking local residents with verified Cherokee ancestry or family stories about Cherokee heritage to contribute information for an upcoming exhibit.
The museum, a partnership between the City of LaFayette and the Walker County Historical Society, held a soft opening May 30 and is currently under development. A grand opening is planned for this fall.
The museum is housed in the historic Chattooga Academy in LaFayette. Rotating exhibits will be featured on the first floor, while the second floor will feature a permanent educational exhibit.
The museum’s next rotating exhibit will explore the history of the Cherokee people in and around LaFayette. The exhibit will include a section on Fort Cumming and will highlight local connections to Cherokee heritage.
Museum organizers are asking anyone with verified Cherokee lineage or oral Cherokee history passed down through their families to share those stories for possible inclusion in the exhibit.
