Walker County voters will decide this fall whether to approve expanded school property tax exemptions for senior homeowners.
The Walker County Board of Elections & Registration has announced a special election on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, asking voters to approve or reject a proposed homestead exemption for Walker County School District ad valorem taxes used for educational purposes.
If approved, homeowners who are 70 years of age or older would receive a $50,000 exemption from the assessed value of their homestead for school tax purposes. Homeowners who are 75 years of age or older would receive an exemption equal to the full assessed value of their homestead from Walker County school district taxes.
The proposal will appear on the Nov. 3 special election ballot.
Residents who are not currently registered to vote have until the close of business on Oct. 5, 2026, to register and be eligible to participate in the election.
Early voting will be held at the Walker County Elections Office, 311 S. Main Street in LaFayette, from Oct. 13 through Oct. 30. Saturday voting will be available on Oct. 17 and Oct. 24. Additional early voting locations in Chickamauga, Rossville and Fairyland will open beginning Saturday, Oct. 24.
Polls across Walker County will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Election Day.
