Walker County commissioners are set to consider final approval of the county’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget when they meet next week.
The Walker County Board of Commissioners will hold its regular scheduled meeting Thursday, Sept. 3, at 6:30 p.m. at the Walker County Courthouse Annex IV, located at 201 S. Duke Street in LaFayette.
Two resolutions on the agenda would adopt the county’s spending plans for the new fiscal year. Resolution R-058-26 would adopt the FY2027 General Fund budget, while Resolution R-059-26 covers the county’s Enterprise Funds and Special Revenue budget.
Commissioners are also scheduled to consider Resolution R-063-26, which would adopt the millage rate for both the incorporated and unincorporated areas of Walker County.
The budget vote follows a special called budget work session held Aug. 18, as commissioners worked through the county’s spending priorities for the upcoming fiscal year.
Another major financial item on the agenda is a proposed $2.2 million contract for remediation and repairs at the Walker County Courthouse. Commissioners will consider awarding the courthouse attic remediation and roof repair project to F.H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen & Associates, LLC.
The board will also consider a nearly $70,000 purchase for the Walker County Jail. A proposed purchase order with Seaborn Commercial Refrigeration totals $69,874.29 for a new freezer and cooler, with the expense to be paid using SPLOST funding.
Several zoning requests will come before commissioners following public hearings. Eugene Hester is requesting three properties — 5724 N. Highway 27, 5714 N. Highway 27 and 19 Laminack Circle in LaFayette — be rezoned from R-2 Residential to CN Commercial Neighborhood. The Walker County Planning Commission has recommended approval of all three requests.
The consent agenda includes resolutions establishing a policy for the purchasing, sale and disposition of county-owned surplus property; authorizing an application for a Georgia Department of Transportation transit grant; adopting the Walker County Hazard Mitigation Plan; and appointing Nancy Langley Debord to the Walker County Department of Family and Children Services Board.
Commissioners will also consider conveying certain county-owned property to the City of Rossville and approving a commercial lease agreement with Speir Investment Properties, Inc. for office space at 108 West Villanow Street in LaFayette. The space would be used by Community Action staff.
September is also expected to be proclaimed National Recovery Month in Walker County.
The meeting includes opportunities for public comment as well as commissioner comments and an executive session before adjournment.
