The Chickamauga City Council will take up property tax rates, a proposed annexation, financing for SPLOST projects and several other matters when it meets Tuesday, September 8.
The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at 1817 Lee Clarkson Road in Chickamauga.
Among the most significant items are public hearings concerning the city’s ad valorem tax rates. The council will hold a first hearing on maintaining the tax rate for general government purposes at 0.0 mills.
A separate hearing will concern the proposed tax rate for the Chickamauga City School District. According to the agenda, the proposed school millage rate would remain unchanged at 14.0 mills.
Another public hearing will focus on an ordinance dealing with health insurance benefits for city retirees. The proposal would repeal a 2020 resolution and reinstate the city’s policy for retiree health insurance benefits, including language providing that a subsequent employer’s offer of coverage would not terminate eligibility.
Under new business, council members will consider a Planning Commission recommendation involving property owned by David and Jodi Bolt on Grand Center Road. The approximately 2.36-acre property is proposed for annexation from unincorporated Walker County into the City of Chickamauga. The request also calls for the property to be rezoned from C-2 General Commercial to R-2 Residential.
The council will also consider a resolution adjusting the city employee health insurance deductible benefit plan.
Financing for city SPLOST projects will make up another portion of Tuesday’s agenda. Council members are scheduled to consider a resolution approving the issuance of a Series 2026 revenue bond for city SPLOST projects, along with a contract for the city to make scheduled payments on the bond.
Another resolution would establish nondiscrimination grievance procedures for certain complaints and designate a nondiscrimination coordinator. The measure is connected to requirements involving a corrected EPA form for an EPA grant.
The agenda also provides an update on a major federal grant announcement. Congressman Clay Fuller and Regional Administrator Kevin McOmber are scheduled to be in downtown Chickamauga on September 18 for an announcement concerning a $4 million EPA grant awarded to the city.
The council is also expected to set a second hearing on the millage rate for September 16 at 6 p.m.
Other items include an appearance by Kristy Bubrig with Cryptid Ball, Josh Elleman with the Chickamauga Recreation Association, approval of previous meeting minutes, public comments and comments from the mayor and council.
Mayor Pro Tem David Jones is listed on the agenda to call Tuesday’s meeting to order.
