Rock City leaders say new sound data shows the proposed Lookout Mountain gondola would operate at noise levels comparable to a quiet neighborhood. Rock City says the closest residence would be about 280 feet from the route, with projected noise levels of roughly 39 decibels. The company says that’s quieter than a modern refrigerator, and newer gondola systems isolate motors and machinery inside stations to reduce noise. Rock City says the system’s enclosed design would further dampen sound, as it continues addressing community concerns about the proposed project.
