The Cherokee Regional Library System will once again offer its annual Food for Fines program from November 2 through November 25, giving library patrons an opportunity to reduce overdue fines while helping local families in need.
During the program, patrons may donate unopened, shelf-stable food items that are within their freshness dates. Each donated item will waive one dollar in overdue fines, up to a maximum of 20 dollars per library account.
Acceptable donations include canned vegetables, soups, pasta, beans, peanut butter, rice, boxed meals and other non-perishable foods.
Food collected at each library will benefit a local organization. Donations at the LaFayette-Walker County Library will support The Care Mission. The Chickamauga Public Library will benefit the Chickamauga Active Living Center, while donations at the Rossville Public Library will support Rossville United Methodist Church. Food collected at the Dade County Public Library will go to Helping Hands Ending Hunger, Incorporated.
Cherokee Regional Library Director Lecia Eubanks said the program is a meaningful holiday tradition and thanked patrons for helping turn overdue books into full pantries.
The Food for Fines program applies only to overdue fines and does not cover fees for lost or damaged items. Patrons without fines are also encouraged to donate food to support local food resources.
