Georgia homeowners are beginning to see property tax relief as the state starts distributing funds through the 2026 Homeowner Tax Relief Grant program.
Governor Brian Kemp announced that the Georgia Department of Revenue is beginning this week to distribute funds to local governments for the one-time program, which was approved by the governor and General Assembly as part of the AFY 2026 budget.
The program provides eligible Georgia homeowners with an 18-thousand-dollar reduction in the assessed value of their homesteads for the 2026 tax year. The reduction is applied directly to property tax bills, lowering the amount homeowners owe.
Some homeowners may already see the savings on tax bills that have been issued, while others will see the relief as local governments continue sending out 2026 tax bills.
State Revenue Commissioner David Burge said the Department of Revenue has been working with local governments to administer the program and deliver savings to Georgia families.
Homeowners with a qualifying homestead exemption do not need to submit a separate application to receive the relief. The reduction will appear directly on the property tax bill rather than being issued as a separate check or direct deposit.
Homeowners with questions about eligibility or the amount of relief reflected on their bill should contact their local tax commissioner’s office.
