Georgia Drivers May Soon Be Able to Use Digital Licenses During Traffic Stops

Georgia drivers may soon have another option when presenting their identification during a traffic stop, as law enforcement agencies across the state begin accepting digital versions of driver’s licenses.
The change stems from House Bill 296, passed in 2025, which updated Georgia law to allow drivers to present their driver’s license or identification card in certain electronic formats.
The Georgia State Patrol and Capitol Police are already accepting digital driver’s licenses, with additional law enforcement agencies expected to adopt the practice by next year.
The move is part of a broader transition toward mobile driver’s licenses, allowing motorists to keep an electronic version of their identification on a smartphone rather than relying solely on a physical card.
However, drivers will not be required to switch to a digital license. Georgia motorists can continue carrying and presenting their traditional physical driver’s license if they prefer.
The change gives drivers the option of using either a digital or physical version of their identification when requested by law enforcement.
