Walker County Hiring Fleet Technician Assistant Manager



In collaboration with the Fleet Maintenance Manager, this position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and managing a multifaceted county government fleet, as well as equipment. This position works under the direction of the Fleet Maintenance Manager and has full operational responsibility in the absence of the Manager.

Maintenance and repair of county assets includes, but is not limited to, passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, heavy-duty trucks, mowing tractors, light and heavy-duty construction equipment, generators, and small powered hand equipment, consisting of a wide range of 2-cycle, 4-cycle both gasoline and diesel-powered engines, as well as specialized emergency service vehicles and related equipment.


  • Manage routine maintenance, as well as minor and major repairs of county fleet and equipment, including specialized emergency services vehicles and related equipment
  • Diagnose complex mechanical problems and repair needs; seek outside diagnosis when necessary.
  • Supervise, prioritize, schedule, and assign repair work to shop personnel; inspects repairs upon completion for quality control.
  • Develop and manage an ongoing preventative maintenance program for the entire county’s equipment and fleet
  • Schedule outside contractors to perform service beyond the ability of staff
  • Train staff in various aspects of operations maintenance and repair
  • Direct the cleaning and maintenance of shop facilities and equipment
  • Perform or oversee preventive and corrective maintenance procedures
  • Organization of inside and out of shop facilities, and parts room
  • Responsible for the cleanliness and operational safety of the Transit fleet
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations and safety, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service
  • Administer and maintain the county fueling station
  • Perform other related duties as assigned


  • More than five years of related experience is required
  • Knowledge and level of competency are commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years of experience or service
  • Knowledge of management and supervision techniques
  • Knowledge of purchasing procedures
  • Knowledge of state guidelines and standards for the maintenance of emergency vehicles
  • Skill in developing short- and long-range plans
  • Knowledge of relevant local, state, and federal regulations


  • Operate a variety of shop equipment and tools associated with fleet maintenance activities, including general office equipment or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, including Google Workspace and iWorQ software systems
  • Effectively communicate in the English language, both in writing and orally
  • Accurately add, subtract, multiply and divide
  • Ability to organize tasks and daily assignments for co-workers efficiently
  • Carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
  • Demonstrated capability to be a self-starter, facilitator, organizer, and innovator
  • Ability to plan and implement projects with little supervision and must be able to work independently
  • Provide excellent customer service to citizens at all times and especially in stressful circumstances by providing friendly interaction with other departments and elected officials ensuring customer satisfaction


  • A valid driver’s license, and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)
  • ASE Certifications are a plus


These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the Fleet Maintenance Assistant Manager position. While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to regularly stand for extended periods, frequently walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch, and lift or move up to 35 pounds frequently and 75 pounds occasionally.  Pulling, pushing, tugging, and towing when moving tires, parts, and equipment are also performed on a frequent basis.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is usually exposed to a noise level that is moderate to loud/frequent. Use of and exposure to strong cleaning chemicals and disinfectants, other allergens, and zoonotic disease occurs daily. Works both inside and outside all year round in a variety of weather conditions. Part of the job requires working without the aid of air conditioning and heating for periods of time.

This position also requires some work on weekends and holidays.

The shop will be managed and staffed during county emergency situations.
