A Summerville couple has been charged with felony cruelty to children after their children were discovered to be severely malnourished. Last Thursday the Chattooga County Sheriff’s received a call from the hospital in Rome about two Children who were being treated there. Officers found the two children, ages 12 and 23 months, to be severely malnourished and dehydrated. The 23-month-old weighed only 14 pounds. Thats just twice its birth weight. The child was described as being extremely lethargic and nearly lifeless. Another child, 36 months old, was found at a relative’s house and it was found to be underweight as well. The two being treated at the Rome hospital were quickly transferred to a children’s specialty hospital for additional treatment. The younger children weren’t even able to sit, stand, walk or otherwise function due to the severity of their condition. The couple, 22-year-old Joseph David Wilson Jr and 22-year-old Santeria Watkins face charges of 3 counts each of 1st degree Felony Cruelty to Children, 2 counts each of 2nd degree Felony Cruelty to Children. The children have been removed from their custody. The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate.
The Walker County Board of Education will hold a Town Hall meeting tomorrow night at LaFayette High School. The event starts at 5:45pm.
Another day and another scam alert. The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office says there is a new scam call going around targeting families who have recently lost a loved one. On the phone call, the scammers say they are from the funeral home and are requesting credit card payment for certain services that weren’t covered by insurance. The office says to never pay for any funeral services over the telephone.
LaFayette Boys and Girls golf teams were back in action yesterday. The Boys team finished in 6th place at the Coosa Country Club in Darlington at the Darlington Invitational. Sophomore Hayden Bowman shot a 76 to tie for 5th individually. The Lady Ramblers were in Carrollton yesterday for the Lady Trojan Invitational at Sunset Hills Country Club. The Lady Ramblers finished 9th. Both teams are back in action on Thursday against Gordon Lee.
