The Chickamauga City Council will consider applying for $2 million in state funding for a project aimed at improving roadway safety, water service and stormwater infrastructure along Lee Gordon Mill Road.
The matter is the only item of new business on the agenda for the council’s meeting Monday, Aug. 17, at 4 p.m. The meeting will be held at 1817 Lee Clarkson Road in Chickamauga.
The proposed resolution would authorize the city to apply for a grant through the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank. The project would focus on Lee Gordon Mill Road, including its intersections with Wilder Road, Crittenden Avenue and Five Points Road.
According to information provided by the city, a blind hill near the Crittenden Avenue intersection limits drivers’ sight distance. The city says increased traffic along the corridor has made the visibility issue a growing safety concern.
Plans call for reducing the blind hill and constructing a traffic circle at the intersection. Officials say the improvements are expected to increase visibility, slow vehicle speeds and improve traffic flow.
The project would also address aging water and stormwater infrastructure. A large section of a two-inch galvanized water main installed during the 1950s or 1960s would be abandoned, with residential service connections relocated to an existing six-inch main. The work is expected to reduce water loss and improve water pressure and volume for residents.
Stormwater infrastructure would also be relocated and upgraded. The city would coordinate with Georgia Power to place existing overhead utilities underground at the intersection and add a decorative sign and other aesthetic improvements.
If the grant application is successful, the city expects funding to be awarded sometime between mid-2027 and early 2028. That timeline would be considered during future budget planning and project scheduling.
No public hearing is scheduled ahead of Monday’s meeting. The agenda includes an opportunity for public comments, although the council will not take action on issues raised during that portion of the meeting.
