Visitors planning to celebrate Independence Day in Northwest Georgia will find plenty of patriotic fun at Cloudland Canyon State Park and James H. (Sloppy) Floyd State Park as part of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites’ statewide celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

This year’s Fourth of July events across Georgia will highlight the nation’s founding through a mix of history, outdoor recreation and family-friendly activities.

At Cloudland Canyon State Park, visitors can take part in programs focused on American frontier skills and history, offering guests a chance to experience traditions and survival techniques from the country’s early years.

Meanwhile, James H. Floyd State Park will host festive activities including sandcastle competitions, water wars and other family games as part of its Independence Day celebration.

Georgia State Parks Director Angie Johnson said this year’s celebration carries special meaning as the nation marks 250 years of independence.

“This year’s Fourth of July is especially meaningful as we commemorate 250 years of American Independence,” Johnson said. “Our parks and historic sites offer a unique opportunity to connect with the stories, landscapes and traditions that shaped our nation.”

State parks and historic sites across Georgia will host a wide variety of themed events throughout the holiday weekend.

Historic sites including Fort Morris Historic Site, Fort King George Historic Site and Fort McAllister State Park will feature Revolutionary War demonstrations, musket firings and living history programs.

Other state parks will offer activities ranging from bike parades and line dancing to watermelon eating contests, sunset hikes and wagon rides.

Officials say the events are designed to combine recreation with opportunities to learn more about the people, places and traditions that helped shape America’s history.
