Community Volunteers to Rebuild 100 Beds Lost in Fire During Fort Oglethorpe Event

A devastating loss is being transformed into an opportunity for community service this weekend as volunteers gather to help rebuild 100 beds destroyed in a recent fire.

In early May, Maggie Lee, president of the LaFayette chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, received heartbreaking news when a storage facility fire destroyed 100 completed beds awaiting delivery to local children in need.

According to the organization, each bed lost in the fire had already been assigned to a child who currently does not have a bed of their own.

Now, community members are stepping up to help replace what was lost.

On Saturday, June 13, volunteers will gather at Lowe’s Home Improvement for a special bed-building event aimed at rebuilding all 100 beds. The project is being made possible through a partnership between Sleep in Heavenly Peace and Lowe’s, a longtime supporter of the nonprofit’s mission.

Volunteers will spend the morning cutting, sanding and staining bed frames from 8 a.m. until noon. Organizers say no special skills are required, and community members are encouraged to participate in the effort to ensure every child receives a safe and comfortable place to sleep.

In addition to volunteer labor, Sleep in Heavenly Peace is seeking donations of new twin-size bed sheets and comforters. The bedding will be delivered along with the newly rebuilt beds to children and families throughout the area.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to building and delivering beds to children who do not have one of their own. The organization operates through local chapters and relies heavily on community volunteers and donations.

Those interested in volunteering can register through the Sleep in Heavenly Peace LaFayette chapter. Organizers hope the event will not only replace the beds lost in the fire but also demonstrate the strength and generosity of the local community in helping children in need. https://shpbeds.org/chapter/ga-lafayette/
