Some members of the Walker County Commission say they would like to be better informed about the county’s administrative business. At the heart of the issue is Commission Chair Shannon Whitfield creating new staff positions. The issue was brought up at last week’s county commission meeting. Whitfield created two positions in the last few years. An Administrative Assistant and a Facilities Manager. Whitfield says the chair is allowed to hire personnel if the position is in the budget and it’s posted publicly. Whitfield says each department head does their own hiring but if people want every potential county employee to come before the board, it’s something that can be discussed.
Walker County Fire and Rescue says they’ve worked four house fires in the last couple of days. They remind you that if you are using a space heater, make sure you keep at least 3 feet of clear space around it. They also say to make sure you have a working smoke detector. If you need a smoke alarm, the Walker County Fire and Rescue has them available for free. Just call 706-539-1255. You can even schedule a time for a fire fighter to come to your home and install the alarm.
