Yesterday was the day for the runoff elections in North Georgia. Shawn Harris won the Democratic nod for US House District 14. Harris won over Clarence Balock with 58% of the vote. Harris will now face incumbent Republican Majorie Taylor Greene in the November general election. Over in Catoosa County. Steven Henry was elected as County Commission Chair. Henry defeated incumbent Larry Black with 52% of the vote. Henry was one of four candidates that the Catoosa County GOP tried to prevent from being on the ballot. The move was eventually overturned by a lawsuit that allowed Henry and four others to appear on the Republican ticket.
The Walker County Sheriff’s Office was in pursuit of a stolen Chevy pickup yesterday. A wanted felon was behind the wheel and refused to stop. The pursuit started on Happy Valley Road. The vehicle stopped just shy of running into the Wilson Road Food Mart. The suspect tried to flee on foot before he was captured by Walker County deputies. No further details are available as of this morning.
Crews are working on Jenkins Road this week. A temporary surface is being put down where the sewer project is taking place. Once the sewer work is finished, Jenkins Road will be repaved. County officials say it will most likely be next year before the work is completed.
Congratulations to recently graduated LaFayette High School golfer Mason Thompson. Mason was named to the Times Free Press Best of Preps Boys Golf Team. Mason finished his senior season with an average score of 77. Thompson won the Area 3-AAA Championship. He finished 6th in the GHSA State Tournament for Class AAA.
