The Walker Rocks playground at the Civic Center is nearing completion.  County officials say the goal is to have the playground open near the end of the month.  Sod was laid around the playground last week.  The next phase of construction will include some pickleball courts and resurfacing the walking track.
Walker County paid off their biggest debt at last week’s commission meeting.  The $10.7 million payment was okayed by the County Commission.  The money will pay off bonds ten years early.  The move will save the county up to 2 million in interest according to Commission Chair Shannon Whitfield.  Whitfield has said he hopes to have the county completely out of debt by the end of the year.
The state of Georgia is launching an in-depth assessment of its prison system.  That’s according to an announcement earlier this week by Governor Brian Kemp.  State leaders hope to identify steps to improve safety.  Between 2021 and 2023, 98 inmates were killed in Georgia prisons.
A man and woman were arrested Saturday in Cartersville for burglarizing a fireworks store.  Adrian Jamar Daniels was arrested after he was found with a UHaul of fireworks stolen from the Great Grizzly Fireworks store.  Police also arrested Sharina Victoria Jackson.  She’s been charged with party to a crime.  Both have been booked into the Bartow County jail.
