Georgia’s tax collections ran more than $2 billion ahead of projections for the budget year that ended June 30, even though tax revenues fell slightly. That means even though Gov. Brian Kemp and lawmakers decided earlier this year to spend part of the state’s surplus, that cash cushion will be larger than expected when the state closes the books on the 2024 budget year in coming months. It was last estimated at $10.7 billion.
Senator Jon Ossoff announced on Friday that federal grant funding is available to help eliminate dangerous railroad crossings in Georgia. The Railroad Crossing Elimination Program provides funding for addressing safety concerns at railroad crossings through the Department of Transportation. Projects eligible for the grant include the addition of grade separations, closing at-grade crossings and improving the existing at-grade crossings where the tracks and road intersect. State, local governments, metropolitan planning organizations or public port authorities can submit applications to be considered for Federal Funding.
The Red Cross says that the need for blood donors right now is critical. The organization is asking donors to make and keep appointments this month to help avoid a summer blood shortage.
