School starts back this week in Walker County. It’s a good time to remember the new school bus law that went into effect July 1st. The law creates stricter penalties for drivers caught illegally passing a stopped school bus. Citations for the offense will now come with a $1,000 fine. It’s used to be only $250. Offenders can also face up to 12-months in jail and points added to their drivers license. “Addy’s Law”, as the law is known was named after 8-year-old Adalynn Pierce, a Henry County girl who was hit and killed while crossing the road to her bus earlier this year.
The Walker County Historic Preservation Commission is holding a work session tomorrow. The meeting is set for noon at the LaFayette-Walker County Public Library. The Commission will be discussing the $20,000 grant the county has received. The money will go towards the updating of the Walker County Historic Resources Survey. The public is invited to attend tomorrow’s meeting.
The latest restaurant health inspection report features several area eating places. In LaFayette, the Krystal scored a 95. The China Buffett got a 100. Armando’s in Rossville scored a 97. It’s an 87 for Choo Choo Bar B-Que in Chickamauga.
If you’re traveling home the Atlanta area today expect some delays. GDOT will be doing work on I-75 north in Adairsville. The work will force the closure of the right lane of 75-north. The work will take all day today to complete. Remember to slow it down in work zones.
A 17-year-old faces murder charges after police say he shot and killed a man in Calhoun. The incident happened Sunday night around 9 p.m. At the Carriage Apartments on Red Bud Road. A report by the Calhoun Police department says officers found the victim lying between two vehicles in front of one of the buildings. According to police, the two men got into an argument when Lowell Yancy pulled a pistol from his pocket and shot the victim. Yancy fled the scene but police were able to catch up with him later. Yancy has been charged with murder.
