New details on a Monday night crash that left one man dead. Georgia State Patrol say they clocked an Infinity Q50 going 114 miles per hour on I-75 northbound in Catoosa County. The vehicle was driven by 22-year-old Hugo Urbano Chavez of Dalton. Police tried to pull Chavez over but he refused to stop. As he neared exit 348 Chavez lost control. The vehicle overturned. The GSP says that there was never any contact between law enforcement vehicle and the Infinity. Chavez was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, 30-year-old Angel Aleman from Dalton was taken to Erlanger in Chattanooga where he remains in critical condition.
Nine felony arrests in Walker County on Monday. 48-year-old Stacy Dewayne Poag was booked on charges of possession of a schedule II. 44-year-old Gloya Heath Williams was charged with DUI and possession of meth. Wendall Barry Brooks, 50-year-old was arrested for possession of marijuana, no insurance, failure to register vehicle and concealing the identity of the vehicle.
Larger planes will be able to land at the Dalton Airport starting tomorrow. The resurfacing of the 5,500-foot runway has been completed and will be available for use on Thanksgiving. A federal infrastructure bill is making the improvements possible. Plans also call for LED lighting and airplane hangars to be built at the airport. Those projects will happen in the next year.
Friday night is the quarterfinal round of the GHSA playoffs. The Trion Bulildogs will face Irwin County. The game marks the first time that Trion has hosted a quarterfinal playoff game in 21 years.
