A house fire in Walker County claimed the life of a 64-year-old man last night. Walker County Fire Rescue responded to 52 Liberty Drive, outside of Chickamauga, around 6:00 p.m. Upon arrival, they found smoke showing from the home. Once inside, they discovered the body of the victim in the living room. Investigators have not released his name, but say he was bedridden and lived alone. Fire investigators credit family members of the victim who arrived before them with helping put the fire out, resulting in minimal damage to the home. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Walker County Board of Education will have a called session today. The purpose of the session is approving the final draft resolution for the upcoming ESPLOST referendum. The meeting will the held at the Advancing Education Center on Osburn Road in Chickamauga. The meeting starts today at 5pm.

Georgia Northwestern Technical College along with Dalton State and Georgia Highlands College have created Northwest Georgia Connect. Leaders from the three colleges signed an articulation agreement this week to create the partnership. Northwest Georgia Connect will allow students to enroll at GNTC, complete one of the articulated associate of applied science degrees and be eligible to enroll in one of the corresponding Bachelor of Science degrees at Dalton State or Georgia Highlands. Northwest Georgia Connect creates new pathways for GNTC students to continue their education in the areas of Criminal Justice, Elementary Education, Engineering Technology, Health and Wellness, Health Science, Information Technology, Organizational Leadership and Respiratory Therapy at either Dalton State or Georgia Highlands.

Walker County School officials yesterday held a ribbon cutting for the new agricultural pavilion at Ridgeland High School. The outdoor space is 80-feet by 140-feet. The money used to build the structure came from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs grant. School leaders say the pavilion will be used for livestock, forestry and horticulture exhibits. It will also provide meeting space for FFA and other organization .
