The Walker County Board of Commissioners met last night for what was the final time in 2024.  The meeting was also the finale for outgoing Commission Chair Shannon Whitfield and District 4 Commissioner and Vice-Chair Robert Stultz.  Chair elect Angie Teems will take office in January.  Commissioners rescinded a $5,850 county supplement for Sheriff Steve Wilson.  Commissioners cited a nearly six percent raise in salary for the sheriff due to the state’s cost of living adjustment for employees along with a longevity clause due to Wilson’s recent reelection.  The addition of the supplement would have meant an additional 10-percent raise from the previous year.  The commission also discussed cutting from two mandated meetings a month to just one.  The motion was tabled for the incoming board members to consider.  Also tabled for a later date was a proposed change to the county’s animal code, which would require dog and cat owners to spay or neuter their pet. Dogs older than six months would be required to be surgically altered or castrated; the same would apply to felines four months and older.   You can read a full recap of last night’s commission meeting on our website at DiscoverWalker.com.
