The Georgia Department of Transportation is making it easier for the public to purchase surplus property with the launch of its first-ever online real estate auctions.
Georgia DOT says the new program expands access to surplus property opportunities by allowing qualified bidders from across Georgia and beyond to participate through an online platform.
The department currently has approximately 200 parcels available for sale, ranging in size from about 0.05 acres to 17 acres. Properties include potential development sites, irregular remnant tracts and wetland mitigation sites.
“Moving our surplus real estate auctions online helps us reach a much broader audience and ensures that more people have the opportunity to learn about and participate in these sales,” said Katrina Anderson, Assistant State Right of Way Administrator with Georgia DOT. “The new platform provides a convenient and transparent way that makes it easier for interested buyers to access information, research properties and engage in the auction process from wherever they are.”
The first phase of the online program includes three auctions, which opened Aug. 1. Georgia DOT says approximately 100 additional surplus parcels are expected to be offered through online auctions in the future.
The initial properties include a parcel in Gwinnett County along State Route 20 between Henry Bailey Road and Cumming Highway; a group of combined parcels in Hall County along U.S. 129 between Barrett Road and Squires Road; and another property along State Route 20 near The Circle at Fox Hollow cul-de-sac.
Through the online system, prospective buyers can review property information and photographs, research auction terms and bidding timelines, conduct due diligence and submit bids from anywhere with internet access.
Georgia DOT says moving the auctions online is intended to remove some of the barriers associated with traditional in-person property sales while increasing public awareness of surplus properties available throughout the state.
Those interested in participating in an online auction or browsing Georgia DOT’s available surplus properties must create a free account through the department’s surplus property system.
Additional surplus properties are expected to become available on an ongoing basis.
