Georgia hunters will soon be heading back into the woods as squirrel season officially opens on Aug. 15, marking the start of one of the state’s longest-running small game hunting seasons.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division (WRD) says squirrel hunting provides an excellent opportunity for both experienced hunters and those just getting started. The early season also allows hunters to scout public lands ahead of the fall hunting seasons while enjoying time outdoors.
WRD officials encourage families and mentors to consider squirrel hunting as an introduction to the sport for new hunters.
“For those looking into becoming a hunter or introducing someone new to hunting, squirrel season is a great way to start,” said Tina Johannsen, assistant chief of the WRD Game Management Section. “Hunting squirrels doesn’t require you to sit perfectly still or stay completely quiet, so it’s often less intimidating for beginners. Squirrels are common throughout Georgia, so new hunters have plenty of opportunities to see wildlife and enjoy a successful day outdoors.”
Because squirrels are found throughout Georgia, hunters have access to abundant opportunities on both public and private lands. Wildlife officials say the season is an ideal time to practice hunting skills, learn woodland navigation, and spend time outdoors before larger game seasons begin.
The Wildlife Resources Division reminds hunters to review all current hunting regulations, ensure they have the appropriate licenses, and follow safe hunting practices before heading afield.
