Rock City Releases New Safety Information as Gondola Proposal Debate Continues
Rock City Enterprises is releasing another round of information about its proposed gondola transportation system, this time focusing on safety as public debate over the project continues.
The company announced Monday that it is sharing safety findings from Doppelmayr Group, the Austrian company selected to build the ropeway system if the proposal moves forward.
According to Rock City, Doppelmayr describes ropeways as the safest and most reliable mode of transportation in the world. The company says its systems are designed to meet international safety standards and undergo extensive testing and certification before entering service. Rock City also highlighted Doppelmayr’s use of continuous system monitoring, routine maintenance, redundant engineering, operator training, and modern control technology as key components of the system’s safety and reliability.
Rock City said it plans to release additional information in the coming weeks addressing other topics that have generated public interest, including noise, environmental impacts, and sewer infrastructure.
The proposed gondola would transport visitors from a new base station at the foot of Lookout Mountain to Rock City. Company officials say the system is intended to serve as transportation rather than an amusement ride, while reducing traffic on mountain roads, easing parking demand, improving visitor access, and minimizing environmental impacts.
Despite those claims, the proposal continues to face opposition from some Lookout Mountain residents who have expressed concerns about traffic, noise, environmental impacts, and potential changes to the character of the mountain.
To provide additional information and answer questions, Rock City has scheduled a series of community meetings:
- Monday, Aug. 17, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Great Hall in Lookout Mountain Town Hall, 1214 Lula Lake Road, Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
- Monday, Aug. 17, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the South Chattanooga Community Center, 1151 W. 40th St., Chattanooga.
- Tuesday, Aug. 18, from noon to 1 p.m. at Flintstone Chapel, 2503 Chattanooga Valley Road, Flintstone, Georgia.
- Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Flintstone Chapel, 2503 Chattanooga Valley Road, Flintstone, Georgia.
- Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the Rock City parking lot, 1400 Patten Road, Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
- Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Grandview, 1301 Patten Road, Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
The public meetings are expected to provide residents and interested community members with an opportunity to learn more about the proposal and discuss the project’s potential impacts as the review process continues.
