Swimming has been temporarily suspended at the public beach area of Queen City Lake after routine water testing detected slightly elevated levels of E. coli along the shoreline.
The City of LaFayette announced the precautionary closure, noting that the testing is conducted regularly in partnership with the LaFayette High School Marine Biology Club to help ensure the lake remains safe for public recreation.
While swimming at the beach area is temporarily prohibited, city officials said dock access, the boat ramp, and fishing at the lake remain open.
According to the city, officials are working to determine the source of the elevated bacteria levels. They believe the increase is most likely related to local wildlife congregating near the beach area.
To help reduce the likelihood of future issues, the city is asking visitors not to feed the ducks at the public beach.
Officials said water samples will continue to be collected and tested daily to monitor conditions and confirm the suspected cause. Those test results will determine when swimming can safely resume and whether any additional measures will be necessary.
