Walker County’s inmate litter crew has already removed more than 44,000 pounds of roadside trash in 2026, according to an update presented during this month’s Walker County Board of Commissioners meeting.
Detention Officer Michael Green shared the progress of the county’s ongoing litter cleanup efforts, highlighting the work of a four-inmate crew that has collected 44,330 pounds of debris from roadsides so far this year.
The cleanup effort has also resulted in the removal of a variety of illegally discarded items, including 130 tires, eight mattresses, 10 couches or loveseats, and countless Styrofoam cups.
The presentation also included a comparison of the county’s litter collection totals over the past several years. Through the first three months of 2026, the crew has already collected more than 44,000 pounds of trash, with projections showing the county could surpass 88,000 pounds by year’s end if the current pace continues.
Previous annual totals presented to commissioners included approximately 74,000 pounds collected in 2022, 26,220 pounds in 2023, 111,220 pounds in 2024, and 64,520 pounds in 2025.
The county’s litter crew plays an important role in keeping Walker County roadways clean while improving the appearance of local communities. Officials continue to encourage residents to properly dispose of waste and report illegal dumping to help reduce roadside litter.
