The Walker County Tax Commissioner’s office in Rock Spring will temporarily close to the public beginning Monday, August 24, as renovations and repairs continue following substantial water damage earlier this year.

The office is located inside the Local Government Services building at 122 Highway 95. The building was damaged in April after a pipe burst overnight, flooding several offices and public areas.

A restoration team began work earlier this month, starting on the second floor of the building, which houses the Walker County Assessor’s office. Work on that portion of the building is not expected to be completed until after Labor Day.

As repairs move forward, the Tax Commissioner’s Rock Spring office will close to the public. The office handles property tax payments as well as vehicle tag and title services for Walker County residents.

A majority of the Tax Commissioner’s staff will temporarily relocate to the Rossville office, where additional service windows will be available to accommodate the public.

The Rossville office is located at 2012 McFarland Gap Road and is open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. A night drop is also available at the location.

Officials say operations at the Walker County Planning and Zoning Department, which is also located in the Local Government Services building, are not expected to be disrupted by the renovation work.

The Local Government Services building is insured.
