Walker County’s unemployment rate stood at 3% in July as unemployment rates declined across all of Georgia’s regional commissions, according to new figures from the Georgia Department of Labor.
Walker County reported a labor force of 32,974 people, with 31,969 employed. The county had 1,005 people classified as unemployed, resulting in the 3% unemployment rate.
The figures come as Northwest Georgia as a whole saw its unemployment rate fall three-tenths of a percentage point over the month to 3.1%. That is also an improvement from July of last year, when the regional unemployment rate stood at 3.8%.
Northwest Georgia’s labor force totaled 459,530 in July, down 1,274 from the previous month but up 7,400 compared with a year ago.
The number of employed residents in the region increased by 164 over the month and by 10,492 over the year, reaching 445,273.
Initial unemployment claims in Northwest Georgia totaled 1,956. Claims increased by 148 from the previous month but were down significantly from a year earlier, falling by 2,196.
The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that unemployment rates declined in all of the state’s regional commissions during July.
“July brought a clear victory for Georgia: Unemployment fell in every single metro area and region,” Georgia Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes said. “When state leaders, local communities and Main Street businesses row in the same direction, results follow. We aren’t slowing down – our focus remains on putting Georgians to work, growing paychecks and building real opportunity in every corner of the state.”
