Another day of winter weather. Walker County Schools and Chickamauga City Schools are closed today. Dalton State is open and classes are operating on a regular schedule. GNTC is open and operating on a normal schedule today. Chattanooga State’s campus is closed. Students will attend classes remotely. UTC is closed. Walker County Probate Court will open at 10am this morning. Walker Transit will resume its normal hours operation today. Once again, the Walker County Civic Center will be open as a warming shelter from 8am to 5pm today. Two felony arrests were reported in Walker County on Monday. 36-year-old Miranda Dawn Wooten was charged with aggravated assault and criminal trespassing. 45-year-old David Shane Young was booked on charges of simple battery and abuse of a disabled person. Catoosa County authorities say a couple died in a house fire on Sunday night. Crews arrived at a home on Stubblefield Road just before midnight. The house was already engulfed in flames. 61-year-old Tenniae Helms and 62-year-old James Helms died in the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Republicans in the Georgia House want to boost funding for its prekindergarten program. Lawmakers are calling for more than 100 million dollars to fund the projects. The money would go toward teacher salaries, building classroom and spending more on operations. Republican leaders say they would ask Governor Brian Kemp to increase spending or they would seek money from elsewhere in the budget. The governor’s office declined to comment.
