According to the National Intergrated Drought Information System, the drought conditions in Walker County have been upgraded to extreme drought.  This marks the first time in four year that Walker County has been in extreme drought conditions.  The drought conditions are expected to remain through the month of November.  2023 had the 7th driest September over the past 129 years.  Rainfall was almost 3-inches below normal in September.

The Georgia Forestry Commission has been working a controlled burn on the Dade County side of Egypt Hollow.  The areas affected include Back Valley Road and Egypt Hollow Road.  Smoke from the fire has been spotted near I-24 East.  Officials say both fires are fully contained by the Georgy Forestry Commission but will continue to burn.

Georgia says it will appeal a judge’s order to redraw some congressional and state legislative districts, but that it won’t fight in court to pause the order for now, meaning a special session later this month to draw new lines is likely to proceed.  The filing came Wednesday in a second case challenging Georgia’s electoral districts being pursued by different plaintiffs. A three-judge panel later Wednesday indefinitely postponed that second trial, which had been scheduled for Nov. 13, after the state said it wouldn’t seek a stay of the first ruling. The judges said they wanted to wait for the results of the special session and the appeal before proceeding.  A federal judge ruled last week that some of Georgia’s congressional, state Senate and state House districts were drawn in a racially discriminatory manner, ordering the state to draw an additional Black-majority congressional district.

Don’t forget the time change is happening Sunday.  You’ll want to set your clocks back an hour before you go to bed on Saturday night.  You can take advantage of that extra hour of sleep.

Good luck to the LaFayette High School boys and girls cross country teams.  They are headed to the GHSA AAA state meet.  The event takes place Friday and Saturday in Carrollton.  This marks the Ramblers fourth straight trip to the state meet.
