Last Wednesday a Walker County jury convicted 53-year-old Robert Allen Mowry of murder.  Mowry was convicted in the 1994 murder of James Richard Harris.  Harris was found dead in his driveway on Boss Road in Chickamauga on December 22, 1994.  Harris had been struck in the back of the head and had been strangled to death during an apparent robbery.  The trial lasted seven days.  Mowry was convicted of felony murder.  He will serve the remainder of his life behind bars.
Walker County Schools workforce preparedness program is getting a 3-million-dollar grant.  The money for Walker Launch comes from the state technical college system.  A learning lab for mechatronics, a field relating to production lines, will be added for students this fall in the 500 Building at the Georgia Northwestern Technical College in Rock Spring.    A culinary lab will be built in the building’s kitchen, while learning labs for the health care and teacher preparation pathways will be added to the nine available for students training for the workforce through Walker Launch.  Students who attend Walker Launch earn technical certificates of credit along with their high school diploma through dual enrollment classes at the technical college. In the first five years of the program, according to Walker County Schools, students collectively earned 108 certificates. Career pathways currently available for Walker Launch include: heating and air conditioning, welding, cosmetology, logistics, computer networking, criminal justice, medical assisting, health care pathways and early childhood education.
Starting on Thursday, the wait times at the main security checkpoint at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport may improve with the completion of a $66-million project.   According to Fox 5 in Atlanta lanes will reopen at 5 a.m., allowing for 600 more passengers to be screened per hour.  The project started in May 2022 and was projected to be completed in April. However, it finished early, just prior to the next big holiday rush. The airport projects more than 3.3 million passengers to, from or through it from December 22 to January 2.
Georgia’s 2024 football schedule was released last night.  Highlights include August 31st vs. Clemson in Atlanta.  September 28th the Dawgs visit Alabama.  On October 5th Georgia Faces Auburn.  October 19th at Texas.  November 2nd is the annual tilt with Florida in Jacksonville.  The Dawgs face Ole Miss on the road and Tennessee in Athens the following two weeks.
