Some Walker County residents have filed a class action lawsuit against the county over what they call an “Illegal tax.” The lawsuit is over the county’s “public safety fee,” which is used to fund emergency services in unincorporated parts of the county. The 3 residents who filed the lawsuit say this involves a property off of North Highway 27 in Rock Spring. The lawsuit claims that the “fee” is actually a “tax” because of the way it is handled by the county. The lawsuit says the fee is only paid by property owners in the county, and is assessed based on square footage. It claims this violates the Georgia constitution, because property taxes are required to be assessed based on property value. For these reasons, the lawsuit seeks to have the fee refunded to everyone who paid it from 2018 to 2022. A spokesperson for Walker County told WTVC in Chattanooga that the county is confident in it’s defense and looks forward to making it’s case in court.
Chattooga County is hosting a community collaboration meeting for homeless support. The meeting is set for Tuesday at the Community Resource Center in Summerville on Eleanor Avenue. The meeting begins at 6pm. The meeting will focus on developing a cohesive strategy and planning the next steps to help the homeless in Chattooga County.
