More details on the Sunday standoff with the Walker County Sheriffs Department. According to a release from Sheriff Steve Wilson, 39-year-old Jimmie Goins was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and elder abuse. Goins allegedly pushed his 81 year old grandmother up against a wall and forcibly took car keys from her hand. The grandmother left and went to a neighbors house and called 911. Deputies on the scene were unsuccessful in getting Goins to come to the door. The Special Operations Group of the Walker County Sheriff’s Office made a soft entry into the residence and took Goins into custody without incident. Bond for Jimmie Goins has been set at $50,000
The latest unemployment numbers released last week show unemployment in Walker County was up 0.7% in May. The 3.3% unemployment rate in Walker County is still below the 3.4% state unemployment rate.
Triple-A says they expect a record number of travelers for the July 4th holiday. They expect more than 1.6 million Georgians will take at least one trip of 50 miles or more between June 30th and July 4th. That surpasses the previous high set in 2019. Gas prices in the area remain among the cheapest in the state. The average price for regular unleaded fuel in Catoosa, Dade and Walker Counties is $3,19 pre gallon. Only Gainesville and Rome have cheaper gas.
