A public hearing is set for Thursday on the proposed new fiscal year budget for Walker County.  The hearing will take place at 7pm Thursday at the Walker County Courthouse Annex III at 201 South Main Street in LaFayette.  A second meeting is set for next Thursday.  You can find more information on our website at DiscoverWalker.com.

Georgia Northwestern Technical College Police Chief, Chad Cardin, was recently awarded the Georgia Fraternal Order of Police President’s National Conference Grant.  The honor enabled him to attend the 66th Biennial National Fraternal Order of Police Conference in Las Vegas.  The grant is given to a local board member to recognize contributing time and knowledge to the law enforcement profession and the FOP.  Cardin was one of only two local lodge presidents selected for the grant, which allowed him to attend the conference and serve as a voting delegate.

The amount of time Georgians spend in emergency rooms is getting longer.  The median time Georgians spent in emergency rooms was 2 hours, 37 minutes last year — the latest in a steady increase from pre-pandemic times, according to the latest Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.  The CMS data, which covers more than 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals nationwide, captures the length of patients’ entire ER visits, not just the time spent waiting to be first seen.  The steady nationwide increase comes as hospitals face a staffing crisis — a problem plaguing vital industries, from health care to teachers to air traffic controllers.
