Gregory Neil Ellis

Gregory Neil Ellis age 62, of Chickamauga, Georgia passed away Thursday, March 21, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia and resided his childhood in Chickamauga, where he graduated from Gordon Lee High School – Class of 1980. While at Gordon Lee he was the quarterback for the football team, played basketball, played baseball, where he pitched and help lead the Trojans to be the 1979 State Champs and received the Mack Smith Award. He furthered his education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree, Eastern Kentucky University where he earned his Master’s Degree and Lincoln Memorial where he earned his Education Specialists Degree. Greg started his teaching and coaching career in 1986 at his Alma Mater - Gordon Lee. In 1988 he taught and coached at South Rossville Middle School. Coach Ellis returned to his Alma Mater at Gordon Lee in 1989 until 1994 where he taught and coached. From July of 1994 until July of 1998, he coached baseball at Lenior City High School. Once again, he returned to Gordon Lee and coached from 1999 until 2006. From 1999 until 2011 he coached football at Signal Mountain where he was part of the coaching staff to lead the Eagles to the State Championship. Again, returning to Gordon Lee, he served as Athletic Director from 2011 until 2015, while coaching football at Baylor High School from 2012 until 2015. Once again, he returned to his Alma Mater as head football coach and lead the Trojans from 2015 until his retirement in 2019. Coach Ellis holds the winningest record in coaching football at Gordon Lee High School. He was a life time member of the GASA, enjoyed playing golf and was an avid Alabama fan – “Roll Tide Roll.” Greg was a member of Elizabeth Lee Methodist Church and preceded in death by his father: Billy Neil Ellis. He is survived by his wife: Crystal Lynn Mozingo Ellis, their children: Shelby Frances Ellis of Memphis, TN, Madison Riley (fiancé: Malachi Parker) Hughes, Reece (Bethany) Carter Hughes, mother: Jean Marie Oliver Ellis, sister: Sherri Neilia Ellis all of Chickamauga, GA, niece: Kristen Drew (Laura) Williams, nephew: Alex (Austen) Spires great nieces: Poppy Elizabeth Williams and Scottie Ellis Spires. The family will receive friends Sunday – March 24, 2024 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm – Sunday – March 24, 2024 in the chapel with Scott Erby and Derrell O’Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Chickamauga Cemetery.
