Melody Lanier Longwith, age 58, of LaFayette passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
She was a giving person with a compassionate heart and worked diligently to make the world a better place. She lived and breathed as a lieutenant of Volunteer Station “Rescue 11” with the Walker County Fire Dept. and deeply loved her Squad brothers and sisters. Her love of people and her desire to help drove her careers as a certified EMT with Hutcheson Medical Center and Angel EMS, and she worked for over 25 years as a dispatcher for Walker County Emergency 911.
Melody was a passionate woman with a great love for animals. She aspired to one day open a rescue and shelter. She was often heard saying “If she couldn’t do it, she’d have it done”, a phrase she learned from her mother, Margaret Ann. She was also an avid Georgia Bulldog fan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Doyle Lanier and Margaret Ann Eaton Lanier; and cousin, Trecia Asher.
Melody is survived by her husband, John Longwith; daughter, Merici (Brandon Wright) Longwith; son, Joseph Lanier Longwith; grandchild, Eric Doyle Wright; sister, Pam (Eddie) Walker; several aunts and uncles; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and her best friend, Joy Morris.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, in the Wilbanks Memorial Chapel with Pastor Wayne Chasteen officiating.
