Roy Gene “Papa” Barton, age 81, of Rossville, Georgia, passed away on Monday, October 21, 2024.
Mr. Barton, son of the late Henry Monroe and Elsie Inez Wheeler Barton, was born September 4, 1943 in Trenton, Georgia. He was Baptist by faith and graduated from Dade County High School, Class of ’61. Mr. Barton served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy and later retired from Alstom Power, formerly known as Combustion Engineering. He enjoyed gardening, watching NASCAR and classic western movies, and listening to country music. He also enjoyed playing golf and guitar and playing Legos with his great-grandsons. The family remembers him as a hard-working and dependable man who always looked forward to spending quality time with his family.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Diana Barton; brother, James “Jackie” Barton; and a great-granddaughter, Madeline “Maddy” Pence.
Mr. Barton is survived by his children, Sonya, Jeannean, and Doug; siblings, Nina (Doug) Porter, Inez Jackson, and Glenn (Emma) Barton; grandchildren, Tim (Tess), Phillip “TJ” (Jaime), Mindy, and Katherine; great-grandchildren, Noah, Corey, Lucien, Gabriel, and Abigail; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are scheduled at the Chapel of W.L. Wilson & Son’s Funeral Home, 555 West Cloud Springs Road, Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on Monday, October 28, 2024 11:30 a.m. with Reverend Russell Marter officiating. Interment will follow at National Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 27, 2024 from 12 noon till 8 p.m. and also on Monday, October 28, 2024 from 10 a.m. till 11:30 a.m.
