Ruby Hazel Scoggins, age 95, of LaFayette, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2026.
She was a valedictorian graduate of West Armuchee High School, where she enjoyed playing basketball. An avid sports fan, she especially loved cheering on the Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldogs. She also enjoyed taking road trips and treasured the time spent with those she loved.
Her faith was an important part of her life. She was a faithful member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and the LaFayette First United Methodist Church.
Affectionately known as “Grammie,” she loved her family and friends dearly. The relationships she shared with those closest to her brought great joy to her life, and she will be remembered for the love she had for them.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Paul Scoggins; parents, Roland and Mattie Pettyjohn; brother, Ernest Pettyjohn; sisters, Lucille Cook, Essie Millican, and Betty Hix; and daughter-in-law, Joy Scoggins.
Survivors include her daughter, Gwen (Chuck) Gregory; son, Dr. Ted Scoggins; grandchildren, Ryan (Julie) Scoggins, Ben (Emily) Scoggins, Emily (Aaron) Varnell, Daniel (Kristin) Scoggins, and Matt (Jessica) Gregory; and nine great-grandchildren, Caroline, Anna Claire, Katelyn, David, Teddy, Hazel, Susie, Tate, and Cora.
A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, August 10, at the LaFayette First United Methodist Church with Rev. David Autry and Rev. Ken Hagler officiating.
Family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 2 p.m. to the hour of service.
Interment will take place at LaFayette Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Matt Gregory, Ryan Scoggins, Ben Scoggins, Aaron Varnell, Daniel Scoggins, and Jim Ingram.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to LaFayette First United Methodist Church, 301 South Main St, LaFayette, GA 30728.
