Monday is Memorial Day. Just a reminder, city and county offices will be closed. Be safe this weekend and remember if you do drink, leave the driving to someone else.

Unemployment in Walker County took a dip in April. The unemployment rate was 2.8% last month. That’s down from March when the number was at 3.3%. According to the Georgia Department of Labor there were 915 people out of work last month in Walker County. The unemployment rate also took a sharp decline in both Dade and Catoosa. The rate in those neighboring counties sits at 2.7%. Chattooga County has the highest unemployment rate in North Georgia at 3.4%, that’s down from last month when it was over 4%.

Two felony arrests on Wednesday in Walker County. 44-year-old Jason Orlando Ansley faces several drug charges including possession of meth, cocaine, two counts of a schedule II and marijuana of less than an ounce. Two counts of obstruction of law enforcement and other charges. 33-year-old Anthony Patrick Gravitt was booked on 1st degree forgery charges. The Georgia Department of Transportation is suspending all interstate lane closures from noon today through Tuesday morning to ease Memorial Day Weekend travel. Drivers are urged to slow down in work zones and move over when possible, as lane closures may return for emergencies. Expect heavier traffic near popular Atlanta spots like Centennial Olympic Park and the Georgia Aquarium. If you’re heading north on I-75 you can expect the usual delays near East Ridge. Southbound traffic will see congestion through Atlanta. Georgia DOT reminds motorists to plan ahead and drive safely this holiday weekend.
