The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded contracts for road and bridge projects in Walker and Chattooga counties as part of a 62-point-8-million-dollar investment statewide.  The largest local project is a 7-point-4-million-dollar slope repair on U.S. 27, also known as State Route 1, at Taylors Ridge in Chattooga County.  Walker County is included in a 1-point-9-million-dollar bridge rehabilitation project involving State Route 157 over Rock Creek and State Route 286 in Walker and Whitfield counties.  Statewide, GDOT awarded contracts for 25 projects on October second.  Resurfacing accounts for nearly 40 million dollars of the total, with additional funding for construction, bridge rehabilitation and safety improvements.
Walker County residents can get rid of unwanted tires for free next month.  The county’s Retire Your Tires Amnesty Day is Saturday, November 14th, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Walker County Landfill.  Residents can dispose of up to 15 tires per household, but tires must be off the rims and free of debris. Proof of residency is required, and residents must unload their own tires.  More than 33-thousand tires have been recycled through the program since 2017.
Drivers in Walker, Dade and Catoosa counties are paying some of the lowest gas prices in Georgia.  According to AAA, the area is averaging three-sixty-one a gallon, 12 cents below the state average.  That’s about 54 dollars to fill a 15-gallon tank.  AAA says prices have been falling, but rising crude oil prices could put renewed pressure on the pump in the coming weeks.
